ABOUT LIFE IN SHANGHAI

Shanghai, with a population of over 24 million, is China’s largest city and is located on the eastern coast. Shanghai is known for its vibrant architecture and world-renowned historical buildings such as the City God Temple, Yu Garden, the China Art Museum and the Bund.

The city is also famous for its sweet-flavoured cuisine, international personality and distinctive Shanghainese dialect. One of the world’s safest cities, Shanghai is a great base for travelers with its strong transport infrastructure and easy access to the rest of China – including high-speed trains to Beijing – and other Asian countries.

Over 150,000 of the population is international, solidifying Shanghai’s multi-cultural feel and reputation as a global hub for finance, technology, innovation and transportation. The city is a charming mix of Chinese culture and international influence, due to the city’s history as an international trading port.

With the influence of these historical roots and the high population of foreigners, English is well spoken through the city and residents are able to enjoy traditional Chinese food and culture, whilst also retaining easy access to restaurants and supermarkets that provide home comforts. Life in the city is always bustling, with myriad restaurants, social groups, clubs and events always open to explore.
