In 2009, Pao School celebrated its first cohort of primary school graduates. As a celebration of this momentous occaision, the parents of the new graduates gifted four small ginkgo trees to the entrance of the flourishing Primary School campus. Ginkgo trees are special, as they are the oldest living tree species in the world. Every season, their appearance changes, and so the gift of the gingko trees also represents the four Houses of YK Pao School: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The trees also reminds us that it takes a long time for people to reach their full potential, just like saplings take many years to evolve into mature trees. Thus, it requires patience and dedication to cultivate talent.
In the harsh cold of winter, though the branches of the ginkgo tree are completely bare, the trunk still stands tall and straight. In the spring, fresh green bursts from the branches and shines in the sun. In the summer, the gingko tree’s branches and leaves are scattered. In late autumn, the sun casts golden light on the gingko tree. The changes seen in the four seasons mirror those seen in the growth of life. They also remind us of the education journey: perseverance in winter; new beginnings in spring; blooming in summer; and a rich harvest in autumn. I hope that Pao School continues to grow and become like an evergreen tree that thrives in all seasons.
