My family has been part of a 14-year journey with YK Pao School that began in the school’s earliest days, at its original campus in the small building leased from the city's No. 3 Girls' High School. After beginning our journey at Pao School there, we then moved with the school to its first independent primary school campus on Wuding West Road. My children eventually studied in both Middle School and High School, witnessing the transition the school made from sharing campus facilities to a fully independent educational institution with three campuses of its own.
In Pao School, I played an active role in a number of different organisations and committees, such as the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), the Hundred Families Banquet, organisation of the school’s first children’s play, and the founding of a choir for parents. As I set about organising rehearsals and performances, I made many new friends, many whom I had never met before. Some of them have since become my lifelong friends. I was impressed with how we all were able to work together to make these performances successful, even though none of us were professionals in the performing arts.
Pao School’s community has an enduring strength. Even after children leave the school, it still feels like home to both former students and parents, and we all still want to contribute to the school. When the Pao School Parents Choir was formed, the initial number of people who rehearsed at most was about 100 people. That number grew exponentially over the next decade and during the school’s 10th anniversary celebration, participating parents included those from Primary School, Middle School, High School and the parents of alumni. To see even the parents of alumni willing to return to Pao School to perform in a choir is uplifting; it says a lot about the impression Pao School leaves on people.
