The Middle School held its visual arts show ‘The Borderless World’ in late May. The show, consisting of visual arts works in many different media. “The students put their creativity on display through these artworks,” said Middle School Art Teacher Wing Wu. “They show that the beauty and charm of art is everywhere, and limitless.”

"Media included in the show, ranged from photography, to glasswork and pottery. What particularly touched me were the modern fashion designs in a Chinese style. Our young designers have dug deep into Chinese culture, drawing inspiration from Chinese poetry, literary allusions, and traditions. They combined these elements with an appreciation for modern trends, to create and present a splendid fashion show. Witnessing the exploration, confidence, and growth of our students in the field of arts filled me with great pride."

——Ada Wang, Middle School Principal and Head of Hongqiao Campus

In the ceramics unit, Y6 students learn about the different stages of clay, from raw material to finished product. The students of Class 6E collaborated to create a unique and boundary-breaking art piece, using one porcelain tile to represent each country or cultural region. This work was an expression of creative teamwork that conveyed the charm of art without boundaries.

In the ‘Our City Our Home’ unit, Y6 students have been exploring the art world and urban architecture. They have learned about one-point and two-point perspective, using this knowledge to create their own 3D-style name plates and images of busy city blocks. They have also studied different architectural styles, learning how these influence our cities. Finally, students collaborated in small groups to design a future community.

With the rapid development of technology, a high-tech world is ever-more a realistic dream we all share. Therefore, our group's overall design is both simple and complex, incorporating circular shapes in each building. The circle symbolizes the technology and performance that connects the entire city together, allowing the viewer to envision a future city with advanced architecture and high-tech functionality.

In the ‘Line and Tone’ unit, Y7 students drew inspiration from Vincent van Gogh's painting ‘Starry Night’. They creatively combined their own scenic photographs with artistic hand-drawn interpretations of the iconic painting, breathing new life and meaning into ‘Starry Night’.

Interwoven Realities

Zigao Wang from Year 7

This is an art piece that blends photography with drawing, featuring the public restroom at Ureddplassen in Norway. Known for its wave-like shape and exceptional design, the site displays the Norwegian approach to public space aesthetics. Over this modern photograph, I have added abstract patterns in black and white lines, exploring the boundary between reality and imagination. Through this artwork, my aim is to inspire a new perspective on our surroundings and uncover the beauty often overlooked in our daily lives.

In the ‘Theme Creation’ unit, Y8 students explored various forms, both through group collaboration and individual thematic work. Throughout this creative process, they continuously experimented with new methods and techniques, uncovering an ever-broader range of artistic possibilities.

Let it Roll!

Pekkie Xie from Year 8

As an electric guitarist, what keeps me going is my love of rock and roll.

In this artwork, I attempt to depict a personal interpretation of my aspirations as guitarist and rock-and-roll musician, from a perspective looking into the spotlight on stage with an exaggerated view. The background of my piece is composed of materials collected from old magazines and newspapers, intending to convey the idea that rock music originates from and transcends everyday life, thereby enabling diverse forms of expression. While rock music may not currently dominate the mainstream, in the future, I hope to share my passion for music with huge audiences by becoming a standout guitarist under the spotlight.

The Forbidden Garden

Ella Trevor-Wilson from Year 8

My work is a monochrome piece composed of hallucinatory lines and floral structures from a dark dream, leading the audience into a garden filled with taboos and unknowns. The overlay of these lines encourages further exploration. It is worth mentioning that these lines often appear in my own visual world. Through this artwork, the audience can experience not only the allure of these lines, but also see the world through my eyes.
