Autumn is coming and October has already passed by. In this season of osmanthus fragrance, YK Pao School has held a series of exciting activities.
Primary School (Year 1 - 5)
"Compassion" is at the heart of traditional Chinese culture and one of the eight major character traits Pao School cultivates in its students. What is "compassion?" Compassion is both providing timely help and adding brilliance to one’s present splendor. There are many ways to express compassion, but what is the best way to help primary school children understand its importance? How can we help to start from the little things and gradually cultivate a warm heart?
In October, the Primary School Character Committee designed a series of activities for children intended to help them understand the concept of compassion. Parents and teachers should work together to encourage the children to complete each task specified in the activities calendar. Overall, there are five themes - one per week - which should be carried out by the children on their own step-by-step.
• Be good to yourself
• Love and care for family and friends
• Love and care for your school
• Love and care for the environment for the Earth
• Learn how to love and care for the whole world
For first-year students, this may be the first time they encounter "compassion." By participating in October's activities, all primary students began to develop their own understanding of the concept.
"'Compassion' means being kind-hearted and embracing others when they are unsure of themselves. "
"I think 'compassion' means helping people throughout the world - being passionate about helping humanity."
"I think that 'compassion' means that everyone has their own unique idea of love, which they can give to others in need. "
To celebrate the Chongyang Festival and support the "compassion" theme, a group of primary students visited a local retirement home and put on a jubilant musical performance for the senior citizens living there. The students' initial stage fright quickly dissipated thanks to the encouragement of the audience, and they felt proud that their musical talents could bring joy to members of our community.
In October, the Primary School participated in a number of sports competitions organized by the Shanghai Sports Federation. Pao students performed quite well overall, reaching the finals and winning second place in the U11 Floorball League, U11 Boys Soccer and U11 Boys Badminton Doubles. In the competition on Oct.20, the U11 girls soccer team put up a great fight but only won one of the three games. Still, the training was valuable for the players who will go on to compete in Korea.
Middle School (Year 6 - 7)
To facilitate the creation of an optimal athletics environment, the Middle School will launch a "competitive sports development project," covering girls volleyball, girls basketball, boys basketball and boys soccer. This project will seek to help students have fun in team sports, while cultivating their sportsmanship as well as leadership and communication skills. Ultimately, the school hopes that our students will be able to perform even better in competitive sports competitions. Prior to the start of formal training, interested students will be evaluated by teachers to ensure they are ready. In this pre-selection process, teachers will monitor students' academic progress, including their grades, performance in class, learning attitude and attendance.
In the past few weeks, students who have enrolled in the pre-selection process have participated in training twice a week, benefiting from the guidance of our experienced coaches. Let's see what these young athletes are working on in this video:
High School (Year 8 - 12)
On September 27th, the C House, Girls Dorm, had a “Girls Chat” about the IGCSE and IB Diploma Programme. Housemistress Ms. Kendrick organized this fun event, in which the older girls provided helpful advice to their younger classmates that will allow them to better adapt to life at Pao School. The girls enjoyed getting the "inside scoop" on classes and talking casually to students with whom they would not normally chat. This is an important benefit that a house system boarding school can bring to students.
On October 13th, Pao School’s Boys Football Team won third place in the U19 (under 19 years of age) tournament held on our campus, a significant accomplishment given most of our players are Year 9 students under the age of 15. Harris Tan won MVP for his excellent athletic and leadership skills.
Pao School's Ultimate Frisbee Team is just a year old, yet on October 20th it won first place the U19 tournament at KCIS - quite an accomplishment for such a young team! The players on the Ultimate Frisbee Team can now enjoy the fruits of their labor.
