Pao School is excited to host the the 2019 ISCMS (International Schools Choral Music Society) XII Festival, themed “Spirit of Peace”, from February 20-23 in Songjiang Campus, culminating in a grand gala concert on the evening of Feb. 23 in the state-of-art Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall.
The philosophy of ISCMS is borne from a unique approach based on collaboration, innovation, creativity and passion. At its very core is the challenge to bring together many cultures with diverse backgrounds to foster a global music experience. ISCMS endeavors to give participants an unrivaled and memorable experience while allowing students to take part in major choral works, which their individual schools would not be able to perform.
The concert will feature performances from 400 students and teachers from 26 international schools worldwide. This year at the ISCMS XII Gala Concert, the Orchestra will perform the China premiere of Michael Tippet’s "Five Spirituals" from "A Child of Our Time" and Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra".
Chris Artley, Composer - 2019 ISCMS Commission (for Big Band & SATB Chorus)
This year's festival will be notable for the inclusion of a specially commissioned piece for choir and big band by composer Chris Artley. Chris Artley is one of New Zealand’s leading writers of choral music, and has won first prize in ten international composing competitions worldwide. Chris is also an accomplished choral singer. Since 2009, he has been a singer and accompanist in one of New Zealand’s premier choirs, The Graduate Choir NZ, directed by Terence Maskell.
Dr Robert Hasty, Artistic Director
Maestro Bob Hasty will be the conductor of ISCMS XII. As a conductor, Dr. Hasty is currently the music director for the Merit Symphony Orchestra in Chicago and has performed with the All-American College Orchestra at Walt Disney World, Beijing Youth Orchestra, Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, among others. Dr. Hasty is also a freelance violinist and violist. He has played with the Aliso Viejo Symphony Orchestra, the Capistrano Valley Symphony, and the Mozart Classical Orchestra.
David Squire, Choir Director & Chorusmaster
Conductor of the Multi-Award-Winning New Zealand Youth Choir David Squire is again serving as Chorusmaster and Choir Director of the ISCMS festival. David Squire is one of New Zealand’s most prominent conductors, and Music Director of the New Zealand Youth Choir. David has taught music in secondary schools for more than 25 years and won Platinum and Gold Awards at the NZCF Big Sing competition, and Gold Awards every year in Auckland’s KBB Music Festival.
Nathaniel Gao, Big Band Director
Nathaniel Gao will again serve as Big Band Director this year. A saxophonist and composer based in Beijing since 2006, he has been a key contributor to the local jazz scene as both a co-leader of the quintet Red Hand as well as a leader of his own quartet and trio. He has had the pleasure of performing with (and learning from) top jazz musicians John Patitucci, Matthew Shipp, Robin Eubanks, and Billy Kilson.
For more than a decade, the ISCMS festival has been one of the most enjoyed events of its kind. In 2008 the ISCMS hosted its first festival, culminating in a performance of "Faure’s Requiem." More than 100 students from 9 international schools participated. In 2017, ISCMS celebrated its 10th anniversary, back in Beijing, with a spectacular Gala Concert at the Forbidden City Concert Hall featuring more than 350 performers.
