Pao School Year 11 students Lucy Chen, Anja Liu, Jerry Shao and Elton Zhou were recognised at the Pramerica Fosun Spirit of Community Awards for their outstanding work in their community. Both Shao and Zhou were among the top 45 youth volunteers, with Shao receiving the silver medal and Zhou scoring bronze.
Launched in 1995, the Pramerica Fosun Spirit of Community Awards is the largest youth recognition programme in the United States. It was launched by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honour middle level and high school students for their outstanding volunteer community service.
The programme's goals are to acknowledge young people who are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Over the past two decades, over 115,000 young people have been officially recognised for their volunteer efforts.
Anja Liu, Year 11, expressed her thoughts on receiving her award for her work in supporting impoverished communities. 'I am very glad for the opportunity to showcase my work and I appreciate the recognition I've received as a result, but more important is what have I learned and achieved during this valuable experience. While this award is an acknowledgement of my efforts, it also motivates me to continue serving my community. I hope that by selling artwork to raise funds for charity will inspire more art lovers to help impoverished children to achieve their dreams. I hope to see more people support our cause. We also support children by donating art materials and providing tutoring services. We want to help them stay motivated and we want them to know we are there to support them.'
