A day for fun and reflection

Pao School Primary Division held its much-anticipated Year 1-3 Sports Day on May 6! The theme of the event was derived from two of the school’s character traits: resilience and compassion.

For this special day, teachers prepared 12 stations of fun, engaging and challenging events for students, including the difficult jump relay, in which students leap through hula-hoops with a volleyball wedged between the ankles as well as the blindfolded beanbag throw and sack race to more traditional egg and spoon races, obstacle course, three-legged race and the celebrated tug of war events.

Sports Day was not only a fun afternoon of activities that emphasised the importance of physical fitness –the day also served to reinforce the themes of resilience and compassion, taught during students’ PE lessons. On Sports Day, students were also asked to reflect upon these themes before and after the activities by providing examples of how they experienced both traits during the events. Although most of the events tested students’ resilience, compassion was examined depending on the activity.

Deputy Executive Principal Crick Chen was heartened by the fantastic sportsmanship displayed by each student, which extended far beyond the results: ‘Everyone was positive and supportive, which shows that our students truly focused their efforts on the process rather than result. This is also indicative of the tremendous work of our teachers in character education.’

Amidst fierce competition with all students turning in their best performances, the Winter House became the eventual Sports Day winners!
