Campers ended Chinese Culture Summer Camp on a high note this year. While the camp session was just a week long, campers made rapid progress in their Chinese language ability in that short period. Timid about speaking Chinese at the beginning of the session, now they insist on speaking the language to express themselves. At the same time, they developed a fundamental understanding of Chinese culture.
During the Chinese Culture Camp, the children sang songs, wrote calligraphy, played and did handicraft work. In the classroom, the environment was animated, as teachers and intern counsellors encouraged campers to express themselves in Chinese. The children’s initial shyness faded fast thanks to their enthusiastic support. Indeed, teachers and counsellors insisted on speaking with the campers in Chinese, and rewarded those who did. The results were so good that now campers can even sing the traditional Chinese song ‘Jasmine Flower’ in Chinese!
Campers had great fun making dumplings, grass handicrafts and dough figurine making. Smiles illuminated the faces of the children when they saw the fruits of their hard work.
On the final day of camp, parents were invited to attend a performance. They cheered the outstanding performance of the campers.
Having gained so much from their time at Chinese Culture Summer Camp, the campers will have precious memories of the experience for years to come.
