Frank Huang, who has served as the supervisor of the Secondary Executive Principal's Office for five years, won third prize at the Han Suyin Youth Translation Awards in November. Frank usually translates the weekly newsletter from the principal's office and is responsible for other communications work as well. Frank is passionate about language study: He majored in English-language education in university and went on to earn a Master of Foreign Languages degree.

The Han Suyin Youth Translation Awards have been held for 28 years and are named for the late Han Suyin (Elisabeth Comber), a British-Chinese writer. To compete in these translation awards, participants complete an English-to-Chinese translation or Chinese-to-English translation online. The texts to be translated are published before winter vacation each year. Participants have until 31 May to submit their translations. The competition is open to all. According to the Organising Committee, this year there are 1822 submissions: 1227 are English to Chinese and 595 are Chinese to English.

Since Frank’s mother is a language teacher, he has long had an interest in languages. He improved his language skills over the years by reading literature. ‘Reading not only improves your language ability, it enriches your life,’ he says. ‘Reading is good for the imagination and one’s analytical thinking skills’, he adds. Further, Frank has always paid close attention to the rules of English grammar. His strong understanding of English grammar played an important role in his winning a translation award.

Pao School is a place that blends Chinese and Western culture. The school looks forward to students learning from Frank’s fine example and honing their translation skills. One day, they too will be translation award winners.
