Last weekend, students and teachers from YK Pao School’s Junior Chinese Camp, Activities Camp and Residential Enrichment English Camp visited the Shanghai City Planning Exhibition Hall, learning about the city’s past through displays and animations. At the 3D image gallery, students boarded a spaceship overlooking the city, gaining a better understanding of Shanghai’s landmarks.

After lunch, students attended the Mad Science class, where they learned about principles of air pressure, fire, and in particular, the difference between magic and science. The lively performances sparked the enthusiasm of our students, who eagerly took the stage to help conduct the experiments.

After science class, a traditional Chinese “Face-Changing” performer appeared and interacted with students off stage. Campers were visibly captivated by the mysterious face-changing technique. After the performance, students learned about the different colors of the opera mask, and each student also received their very own mask to decorate!

On Wednesday, students from our Junior Chinese Camp visited the Changning Cultural Center. At the Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Center, campers had plenty of fun making their very own fragrance sachets and hand-woven rope knots.

Walking along the old streets at the center, it was as though time stood still. Along the way, teachers introduced students to the food shops, pharmacy, inns and pawn shops. Students were very fascinated and asked many questions. Our more senior students took on the task of exploring each area and determining its name and purpose.

At the theatre, our campers studied Beijing Opera with professional performers, gaining an understanding of the major roles. It might have been their first attempt at Chinese opera, but our students' imitations were convincing enough to earn the applause of everyone in attendance!

Our two-week summer program is nearing conclusion, and all students from our Junior Chinese Camp will be putting on a wonderful talent show on July 10 to showcase their learning outcomes. This much-anticipated finale is set to feature drama, song, martial arts, and Hulusi performances!
