Last week, about 20 teachers and one student from YK Pao School Secondary Division participated in Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA), an internationally-recognized first aid course. This course was taught by two instructors from Wilderness Medical Associates, a company specializing in educating others on administering first aid in remote locations.
We learned and practiced how to treat injuries and illnesses in case of emergencies and how to manage victims when definitive medical care is hours away. Among the faculty participants were the school’s Wellness team, Head of Years, dorm parents, 'Week Without Walls' leaders, and PE teachers. Special recognition goes to Year 10’s Ariel, the only student participant involved in the training. Not only did she complete all requirements to be certified for wilderness advanced first aid, but she finished with one of the highest scores in the class. If there is any student who needs help and a doctor is not in the area, you would be lucky to have Ariel nearby! Congratulations to Ariel and all teachers who participated in this course.
Preventing accidents and maximizing safety is at the forefront of any decision made at YK Pao School, but having qualified people who know how to respond when emergencies happen is great too!
